As a manager or a supervisor, you may notice your employees feeling anxious or depressed during their shift. You want to do something, but you do not know if it is your place or what to do. In order to be a leader in your company, you need to be active in the negative emotions your employees are experiencing so that they feel comfortable turning to you and ensuring they perform at their best.
Speak to Your Employees
In order to start a conversation with your employees, let them all know that you have an open-door policy. This means letting your employees know that they can come to your office if they need help or are having problems. Give your employees the sense that you are approachable and that you are someone they can lean on. If your employee tells you that they have a mental health disorder, ask them in what way you can accommodate them so they can get their work done on time. Keep checking in on them to ensure they are doing okay and are comfortable in the workplace.
Bring Awareness of Company’s Mental Health Policies
If you feel like an employee is uncomfortable sharing with you their worries, let them know what the company has to offer. There are normally Employee Assistance Programs that have helped employees with alcohol or substance abuse. Now, these programs cover a wide range of care like child or elder abuse, relationship problems, financial or legal problems, and traumatic events. You can also give your employee pamphlets to mental health resources to show you care about your employees as people. You can also let them know about online therapy programs like TalkSpace where you can begin this therapy without taking off work.
Take Care of Yourself
You may be encouraging your co-workers to take some time to unplug. The same needs to be said for you in that you cannot take care of others if you cannot take care of yourself. If you take care of your mental health, then your company will be filled with positivity and happiness. Creating a space where employees can openly communicate with you without any judgment or tension will allow people to be more comfortable with each other. A good leader means caring about the mental health of your teammates and not being afraid to do something about it when things go wrong.
