You may not realize just how many activities you do every day that can suck the energy out of you. A lack of energy can lead to depression and fatigue, leading to a lack of motivation. By knowing what daily habits lead to mental exhaustion, you can find healthier alternatives to get your energy back.
Waiting Too Long in Between Meals
Our body depends on the supply of food we eat for our energy. Protein, fat, and carbs provide us with the fuel we need to get through the day. When blood sugars are low between meals, some carbs are stored in the liver for later use.
However, according to a September article from the Huffington Post titled “12 Mindless Habits That Are Secretly Exhausting You, ” that backup energy only lasts three to six hours. Going too long without food will set off biological and psychological mechanisms, which lead to strong cravings for processed carbs.
As a result, our insulin levels crash which leads to feeling physically drained. The best way to fix this is to keep a snack on hand that you can bring with you that does not need to be refrigerated, like protein bars.
A Messy Desk
A clean working environment can make an impact on how much work you get done. If papers and folders are all over the place, it can make you distracted with finding everything. Tasks will take longer to complete, which will rid you of the energy you need to get things done.
The solution to this is to organize your desk and prioritize any papers you need with what needs to get done today. Spend 10-15 minutes making sure everything is in its place while listening to calm music.
Answering Calls Right Away
Phone calls can deplete your energy, where you focus all of your attention on what the other person is saying. Since you cannot see that person’s face or body language, you only have their voice to go off on. You could be in the middle of something, but then a phone call takes the attention away from your task.
So before you decide to accept the call, ask yourself if you are ready to have a conversation right now. You can always ask the person calling you if they can give you a text first and see if it is anything important that cannot wait until later.
