We are used to thinking of people who stare at themselves in the mirror for long periods of time as being vain. While this may be true for some, there are therapeutic benefits to be had by looking at yourself that don’t involve vanity. In the mental health practice called mirror gazing, you can stare in the mirror to see yourself the way others see you. Mirror gazing will help you on your journey towards self-love in becoming reacquainted with your body and soul.

What to Expect From Mirror Gazing

Mirror gazing is not going to work for you if you come at it from a narcissistic perspective. Imagine the process like a first date with a stranger. Think of it as meeting yourself and getting to know yourself again, eventually leading you to love yourself.

You will see that your body is a shelter to your soul and learn to appreciate it more. Developing this kind of compassion with yourself will make you think twice the next time you decide to do something that compromises your health, like drugs, alcohol, or other risky behaviors.

How to Get Started

When you gaze into the mirror, find a focal point. It can be an area of your face, your shoulder, your neck, and more. For example, if you look at your chest, notice how your breath moves up and down. Dedicate at least three minutes to gazing at this focal point. If you are skilled at looking deeply into the eyes of the person who is talking to you, looking at yourself for a few minutes should be simple enough.

What to Think About

Think about your emotions when you look at yourself in the mirror. Do you feel appreciated, loved, admired, or respected? Your strengths are right in front of you, and you don’t need validation from anyone else. Ask yourself if you have reached the point where you have loved yourself completely. If mirror gazing has helped you love and accept yourself, you can use that confidence out in the real world.

Mirror gazing involves dedicating a few minutes to looking at yourself in the mirror. While we are taught that staring at the mirror is a sign of vanity, this meditative practice is about reacquainting you with yourself. Ultimately, you will be able to take control of your anxiety and love yourself more. At Alta Loma, we understand the importance of self-love, and we are here to help you.
