Songs have a way of sending messages to listeners. For those who are struggling with depression, music can be a great tool to help you feel better. Listening to the tone and lyrics of a song can make a world of difference in your mood by the end of the song.
Lean On Me
Bill Withers’s song “Lean On Me” talks about how we all have pain and sorrow, but that tomorrow will always come. This verse can be very relatable for those with depression in how we all struggle with sadness, but that knowing there is a tomorrow should give us hope for things to get better. “Lean on me, when you’re not strong, And I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on.” This lyric can be very inspirational in that it is like Withers is saying that when you feel sad, to lean on him or anybody willing to be your friend and you will be helped. This song can encourage you to speak to a therapist, a family member, or a friend.
Happy
Pharrell William’s song “Happy” is all about just being your happy self. This uptempo tune encourages listeners to clap along if you feel like “happiness is the truth.” Someone with depression would enjoy this song for being told to be happy. It would be impossible not to dance or sing along to it. In the lyrics “Here come bad news, talkin’ this and that, Well, give me all you got, don’t hold it back, Well, I should probably warn ya, I’ll be just fine, No offense to you, don’t waste your time,” it is like the lyric is saying that no bad news can bring you down because you are just consumed with so much happiness. So whenever you are experiencing a negative thought, just think of this song.
Brave
Sara Barielle’s “Brave” is about having the courage to speak out. It’s about figuring out “a way out of the cage where you live.” This stimulating song starts off by telling you that you can be amazing and instead of hiding in the shadows, you can be brave and say what is on your mind. This can encourage you to speak out to someone like a therapist or your peers whenever you are struggling with your troubles. Listening to these upbeat songs will inspire you to reach out to someone and be happy.
