Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often misunderstood by individuals struggling with it and the general population. One of the most significant pieces of the disorder that is not well known is its origins. The causes of BPD are often confused, mistaken, or entirely overlooked by individuals trying to learn about the disorder. Luckily, we will list them here to give you a better idea of what causes borderline personality disorder. By learning about its origins, you can begin taking steps in the proper direction to support your recovery.
Genetic Factors
Experts believe there are three primary factors for causing BPD, the first being genetics. While they do not believe BPD runs in families, it is possible to have certain genes that make you more vulnerable to developing the disorder. More influences are needed to fully cause BPD, as genetics are not enough on their own.
Biological Factors
The second contributing factors to the origins of BP are biological. MRI scans of individuals with BPD have found that three parts of the brain are either smaller or have a higher, more unusual number of occurring activities. These include the amygdala, the orbitofrontal cortex, and the hippocampus. The rare occurrences in the three parts arise from how the brain forms during your upbringing, so these irregularities can contribute to BPD symptoms later on.
Environmental Factors
The third contributing factor to BPD is environmental factors. While experiencing these factors does not guarantee the development of BPD, they do increase your risk. This is especially true if you have the above genetic or biological factors listed.
Common environmental factors that may contribute to BPD include:
- Experiencing physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
- Experiencing unresolved fear, anger, and distress for an extended period during childhood
- Experiencing neglect by one or both parents
- Growing up surrounded by mental health or substance use disorders, such as bipolar disorder or alcohol use disorder
