The struggle with addiction and mental health issues can be all-consuming. It can leave us neglecting ourselves and abandoning life-affirming activities that once brought us balance and joy.
Once we have asked for help, and have started to receive support, questions regarding what to do with ourselves and our time may arise.
What do I do with myself now? How do I occupy my time? What was my life like before? What if I can’t remember what I loved? Or, I have forgotten how to do basic stuff, and I feel silly.
Please know that these feelings and questions are completely normal. Despite any frustration, try your best to remember that this is an opportunity to rebuild your life however you want! Yes, recovery can be excruciating, but it should also be liberating!
Life-Affirming Activities Can Include:
- Stretching in the morning
- Developing a spiritual practice
- Cooking
- Playing sports
- Meditating
- Reading
- Going to the doctor
- Working out, or trying yoga
- Planning for the future
- Attending meetings
- Developing known strengths
- Practicing consistent hygiene
- Writing daily affirmations
- Investing in yourself
- Spending time with loved ones
- Asking for help
- Being in nature
Start small and try to stay consistent with these activities. The repetition and slowly growing routine will bring tremendous benefits to your self-esteem and your healing.
Take the time to fully reinvest in you! Understand that these activities do not need to be elaborate or hugely time-consuming.
They should not be stressful but peaceful and soothing. Anything that is healthy, grounds you, and helps you stay centered is a life-affirming activity.
