It can be intimidating for those considering therapy to see the stigmas surrounding it and other false information. Watching TV and movies can cause people to be hesitant to seek help from a therapist because they believe the scenes portrayed in their favorite shows are what truly happens. However, therapy is a very real way to seek help for mental disorders and addiction, and other everyday problems that people face. Disproving common myths in therapy can help individuals be more open to accepting the healing that therapy can offer.

Myth #1: Those That Go To Therapy Are Weak or Crazy

This myth stems from the stigma that if you receive help, you must be weak or insane. However, those that pursue therapy have found the strength within themselves to admit that they need help and want a brighter future. Therapy can be used for various reasons, from mental health to addiction to everyday obstacles in life. No matter what, an individual is not crazy or weak for going to therapy. They are people who want to live a happier and healthier life.

Myth #2: Therapists Only Care About Money

This myth stems from TV and movies where the therapist is wealthy and does not truly care about their clients. In reality, if therapists wanted a job for the money, they would switch careers. Therapists are there to help you and would not have gone through the schooling just to make money. They care about their clients and want to help people get better.

Myth #3: I Don’t Need Therapy If I Have Good Friends

While friends can be an excellent outlet to discuss your life problems, they don’t have the necessary training and schooling needed to help you through complicated issues such as trauma, mental illness, addiction, and more. Therapists are specifically trained to help you through tough times and get you the help you need.

Myth #4: Therapy is Too Expensive

While some therapists do cost a lot of money, there are cheaper or even free options. Some community centers offer free therapy, while some online options are less expensive for those with low-income. Individuals can always find an option that suits their needs and budget.

Myth #5: Men Shouldn’t Go To Therapy

Some people entirely accept therapy for women and children but think men are less “manly” for attending. However, men can gain just as many benefits from therapy to help them lead happier and healthier lives. It does not make them less of a man or weak. It makes them strong for admitting they need help despite social stigmas.

There are various stigmas and myths surrounding therapy that causes many individuals not to seek out the help they need. Debunking these myths can provide more people access as it breaks the stigma of going to therapy and instead promotes the practice. At Alta Loma Transformational Services, we have seen many men be hesitant to go to therapy because of multiple preconceived notions. However, over time, they see its benefits and can be more appreciative of what it can do for them.
