A study published this year assessed 88 patients who’d been diagnosed with depression. Overall, the researchers found that depending on the stage of recovery, clients experienced different mindsets, symptoms and overall healing processes:
Stage 1: Denial and Anger – at this stage, we’re likely just learning that we could be struggling with depression. In many cases, it’s easy to believe that the way we think and feel reflects our reality – but that’s the mental illness talking. We may go through a phase of denial and anger because it’s hard to accept that a mental illness is present.
Stage 2: Bargaining – to make “peace” with our depression, we may make small negotiations in an attempt to make it go away. We may say that once we change jobs, buy new clothes, drink alcohol, etc., we may feel better.
Stage 3: Depression – mental illness doesn’t just go away quickly, and depression will show itself again. We feel those feelings of hopelessness again, and the pain re-emerges.
Stage 4: Acceptance – after some time has passed, we begin seeing our experiences more objectively, and that’s when acceptance can take place. We may start taking more proactive measures to improve our health and wellbeing now.
